Woken by a light tap on the door we dressed and had our
tea/coffee before wandering out to the truck.
We went looking for the young Zebra that the Cheetah had
been trying to hunt the previous night. After some searching Mungai pointed to
some adult Zebras that were making noise and kept looking back. We counted just 4 animals and sadly, no youngster.
After quite a lot of searching Mungai found the Cheetah. They didn’t look fed.
Mungai mentioned that there had been quite a bit of Hyena action that morning
and suspected that they had stolen the Cheetahs kill.
Later we headed out looking for Gerenuk, Black Rhino and
Leopard. We went out into a different area of the park known locally as
Antelope Valley. Just after we found a white Rhino and a calf sleeping on the
ground. Mungai then spotted the Gerenuk. This animal is a cross between an
Impala, a goat and a short necked giraffe. The inside of its ears are
beautiful. They’re quite large and white inside with a leaf pattern of black.
As time was getting we started to head back via a different
route to which we came. Mungai decided to have a look just off the track as he
suspected that there was a Black Rhino around, sure enough we came across a
mother and it’s juvenile. The youngster Mungai reckoned on being about 2 years
and that Mum was probably already pregnant. The youngster would be forced away
in the coming months and in time would leave anyway as these Rhinos tend to be
solitary.
As we came across the swamp area of the conservancy we
started to see some water birds,
Egyptian
Geese, Ladysmith Plovers, Sandpipers, Hadada Ibis, Sacred Ibis and
also some Grey Headed Kingfishers. Tamsin merrily clicked away and took quite a
few stunning pictures. The swamp area is also good for Leopard so, we were on
the lookout for one. In this swamp area we stopped for our sundowner.
